The fight against climate change requires a clear and reliable understanding of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In Burundi, monitoring and evaluation of national emissions are carried out in accordance with the guidelines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
Summary table of data and methods for calculating GHGs in Burundi
| Sector | Data used (national sources) | Method of calculation (IPCC) | Gases considered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agriculture & Livestock | Number of livestock Cropland; Amount of nitrogen fertilizer used | Tier 1 & Tier 2 based on available data | CH4, N2O |
| Forests & land use (AFAT/LULUCF) | Forest statistics; Deforestation and reforestation rates; Land-use change | Tier 1 (default IPCC factors) | CO2 |
| Energy | Wood energy consumption (coal, firewood); Imports and consumption of fossil fuels; Electricity generation | Tier 1 (default IPCC factors), Tier 2 if local data available | CO2, CH4, N2O |
| Waste | Municipal solid waste volume; Domestic and industrial wastewater management | Tier 1 (simplified IPCC method) | CH4, N2O |
| Industrial processes | Cement and brick production; Solvent use | Tier 1 (default IPCC factors) | CO2, CH4, N2O |
